Five day group class in Spain
We go to Spain every summer to study toreo. A five day class featuring training in the techniques of toreo, visits to historic bull ranches, tientas with pedigreed livestock, bullfights, superb cuisine and wines and all the history, art, cultural activities and beauty that the central Spanish region of Castilla has to offer.
When : June 1 - June 5, 201 (the week immediately prior to Pamplona's sanfermines)
Where : Salamanca, one the most beautiful cities in Europe. A university town since 1230, it is stunning architecture, medieval ambiance and a vibrant local culture dominated by lively young people. Salamanca is also the capital of the campo charro, one of Spain's most vital bull ranching sectors, that spreads like parkland around the city. Our guests will enjoy Salamanca's animated after-dark scene and spend the days exploring the surrounding countryside.
What : the class includes accommodation in a three star hotel sited in a fully restored 18th century building, just steps away from Salamanca's architectural jewel, its plaza mayor. Also included is all ground transport, all training, equipment, ranch visits, practical classes with thoroughbred livestock (tientas)
Who : The California Academy of Tauromaquia is America's first school of instruction in toreo. We are expert in travel to the world of the bullfight and specialize in offering a back stage pass to this most misunderstood art form. In nine years we have trained hundreds of people from around the world in the techniques of toreo, in California, Europe and Latin America.
Who is invited? The academy provides instruction and career assistance to toreros at every level. Our special area of expertise is introducing absolute beginners to the fascinating lifestyle of the aficionado practico, or amateur bullfighter. This class will consist of beginners and intermediate students of the academy.
Itinerary : Sunday June 22nd. Class meets at Madrid international Airport (barajas) We will travel together to Salamanca (approx 2hours) for check-in to the hotel. This pre-class meeting in Madrid is optional if you have other plans in Spain that would get you to Salamanca before or after the 22nd there is no problem the city is simple to reach by rental car, train or bus from almost anywhere in Spain.
Monday June 23rd - Friday June 27th. We will train in the techniques of Toreo and prepare for practical classes with livestock (tientas) The class consists of three hour theory classes interspersed with visits to some of the most traditional and historic bull ranches in Spain, the ranches where Belmonte, Manolete and El Cordobes trained. We will visit medieval Avila with its perfect circuit of walls and return each evening to the Renaissance gem that is Salamanca.
The Tientas: A tienta is part of the work of raising fighting bulls. Yearling heifers are tested for their bravery and style. Toreros provide this service for the ranchers and therefore get in training time. A tienta is not a bullfight and doesn't involve killing. Instead these rather expensive and highly bred animals undergo an elaborate evaluation to determine their suitability for breeding. It is the perfect atmosphere for beginning students to debut as toreros and for intermediates to hone their technique. All tientas feature pedigreed livestock and are directed by professional matador de toros.
