Weekend Intensive in Colonial Mexico

For this trip we fly to the aeropuerto del bajio in central Mexico. We drive from there through the most beautiful city in Mexico, Guanajuato and then over the sierra to the state of San Luis Potosí. Just past the state line in the middle of Mexico's high central plateau is the bull ranch "espiritu santo." The Labastida family were pioneers, bringing san mateo fighting stock to this wild and beautiful countryside and helping to develop a pedigreed animal that dominates Mexican bullfighting today.

These bulls were the medium for the great artists of Mexico's silver age of toreo. Our host at espiritu santo is Pablo Labastida, one of a generation of young and dynamic ganaderos attentive to a storied tradition but expert in the modern techniques of bull-rearing. We will dine with the family on the veranda and sleep in rooms built on the plaza de tientas. The food prepared by señora Paulina and staff is excellent and very Mexican. don Pablo has a nice wine cellar and the open bar is very open. The atmosphere at the finca is very, very special.

We stay all week-end, training in salón, testing heifers in the plaza de tientas, riding horseback among the bulls and participating in all the faenas del campo that are such a big part of this way of life.

We also visit nearby, prestigious ranches such as "Carranco" and "Santo Domingo" or travel to beautiful small towns like San Miguel de Allende or historic Pozos. Some week-ends feature a Sunday bullfight in San Luis Potosi as well depending on the season.

Working with our own travel consultants we can help you book your flight from about anywhere. Those of you who would like to fly from Tijuana with us have the option of arriving early and training with the academy in San Diego prior to the trip. We'll be training every evening throughout the week prior. The price is $2,000 and includes everything but the flight (Tijuana $350) all meals all training all livestock all accommodation all transfers/transport, every natural, derechazo, trincherazo, acuchon and voltereta.
